Potholders - knitting project for beginners

Abbreviations
st = stitch(es)
k = knit
p = purl

Material: 150 g cotton (330 m / 360 yd, 8 ply) for four pot holders, knitting needles 4½ (US 7), crochet hook 4 (US G/6, UK 8)

Gauge: 19 st = 10 cm (4 inch), knitted with double yarn in stockinette stitch

The potholders are knit with two strands of yarn to make them thicker and make it save to hold hot pots.

Size: 16 x 16 cm (6.3 x 6.3 inch)

Edge stitch: Slip the first stitch of every needle without knitting or purling it. Slip it knitwise if you purled the last st of the previous row. (Insert the needle through the first stitch from front to back and slip the stitch off.) Slip it purlwise if you knitted the last st of the previous row. (Pass the needle under the yarn and insert it in the first st from right to left. Slip the st off and pass the yarn over to the back of the work.)

Pattern 1: super easy

Cast on 30 st with two threads and knit in garter stitch (knit even and uneven rows).
Change color combination after 25 rows.
Bind off all st in the 51st row until 1 st is left. Put this st on the crochet needle, chain ten and fasten with a slip stitch in the corner of the work to make a loop.

Pattern 2: easypeasy

Cast on 30 st with two threads and knit in moss stitch (alternating p1, k1 in even rows and k1, p1 in uneven rows).
Bind off all st in the 51st row until 1 st is left. Put this st on the crochet needle, chain ten and fasten with a slip stitch in the corner of the work to make a loop.

Pattern 3: a challenge

Cast on 30 st with two threads and knit as follows:
Rows 1 to 3: 1 edge st, * p1, k1, repeat from *, end with p1.
Rows 4 to 21: 1 edge st, p1, k1, p11, k1, p1, k11, p1, k1, p1.
Rows 22 to 25: 1 edge st, * p1, k1, repeat from *, end with p1.
Rows 26 to 43: 1 edge st, p1, k13, p13, k1, p1. Change colors after the 31st needle and again after the 35th needle.
Rows 44 and 45: 1 edge st, * p1, k1, repeat from *, end with p1.
Bind off all st in the 46th row until 1 st is left. Put this st on the crochet needle, chain ten and fasten with a slip stitch in the corner of the work to make a loop.

Pattern 4: another nice one

Cast on 34 st with two threads and knit the next four rows ten times:
Row 1: 1 edge st, * k2, p1, repeat from * until the end.
Row 2: 1 edge st, * p2, k1, repeat from * until the end.
Row 3: 1 edge st, * k2, p1, repeat from * until the end.
Row 4: 1 edge st, k33.
Row 41: 1 edge st, * k2, p1, repeat from * until the end.
Row 42: 1 edge st, * p2, k1, repeat from * until the end.
Bind off all st in the 43rd row until 1 st is left. Put this st on the crochet needle, chain ten and fasten with a slip stitch in the corner of the work to make a loop.

Finishing: Weave in ends. Block and shape so all four pot holders measure 16 x 16 cm (6.3 x 6.3 inch).
